The Other Side Of The Tracks
Journal of A Vista Worker
Margeurite Coppinger, AR 77-78
As I passed the sign--You're now entering ARKANSAS, it suddenly occurred to me that I had no idea what was ahead, it was big question mark. Even the state was one I knew little about. Until Winthrop Rockefeller established residence there, it was like an "unkown quanity" to most people in the East and West.
When I decided to step into the unknown as a VISTA, I felt the only way to really vividly recall my impressions, aspirations, traumas, which I instinctively knew lay ahead, would be to record in a journal my daily experiences. The frustrations, heat, humor, comradeship, loneliness, and unending activities, as a VISTA worker.
